Frank Henry Shapleigh (American, 1842-1906) signed l.r. "F.H. Shapleigh", depicting a Florida landscape with stone fort, dated 1889. The fort is Fort Matanzas in St Augustine, Florida. Sight size: 19-1/4"h x 29-1/4"w Overall: 31"h x 41-1/4"w Together with the painting is a letter and postmarked envelope from the artist to Charles Shultz written from the Hotel Ponce-de-Leon in St Augustine, Florida where the artist Frank Henry Shapleigh had a studio. The letter states, " Tuesday, March 12, 1889, Hotel Ponce-de-Leon, St Augustine, Florida, Mr. Charles Shultz, Charlie, Today I forward the painting of the "OLD FORT AT MATANZAS" and have no doubt will reach in good order. Since you left, The mas??/ has been very much better, and the house is now nearly full. I think there must be nearly four hundred here-and it will probably remain full for the next two weeks. Will you be kind enough to let me know that the painting is received and abo..? Very truly yours, F.H. Shapleigh". Provenance: The property being deaccessioned from the Charles Shultz House to benefit the collections fund of Montclair History Center, Montclair, NJ, in accordance with the museum's collection policy.
