Engraved, "Presented to Supreme Chancellor William Ward K of P by the Knights of Minneapolis Oct 18 1889". Together with a gold mounted cane. 37"l. From the book "Pythian Knighthood, It's History and Literature:..." General William Ward was born in the city of Newark, NJ. He was identified with the mercantile and manufacturing interests of the city of his birth until the War of the Rebellion, when he gave up his business as a merchant to become captain of Company D, 8th Regiment New Jersey Volunteers, and was mustered into service August 29th, 1861. He participated in the siege of Yorktown, battles of williamsburg, Seven Pines, Fair Oaks, Seven Days' Retreat and Malvern Hill. In July, 1862, he was commissioned as Lieutenant-Colonel and assumed command of the 8th Regiment. While leading his Regiment at the Second Manassas he he received five musket balls and lost an arm. In 1867, after regaining sufficient strength, he was appointed Assistant City Clerk in Newark, NJ and promoted to City Clerk in 1868. He was later appointed as Postmaster of Newark by General Grant and served in that capacity for 12 years. William Ward was initiated into The Knights Of Pythius in 1869 He was elected Grand Vice Chancellor in 1875, and Grand Chancellor in 1876. He was elected Supreme Representative in 1878 and the Supreme Vice Chancellor in 1886 and ascended to Supreme Chancellor on July 16th, 1889.
