British (1759-1825) John Thomas Serres was the celebrated maritime painter for King George III. This work depicts the sunset Battle of the Saintes off Dominica. The battle was a decisive victory for Admiral Lord George Brydges Rodney, which ultimately ended the French threat to Jamaica. The plaque reads, " Admiral Lord Rodney's Action Against the French Fleet - 12th April 1782 - 1759 J.T Serres 1825 - Painted in 1792- From the Collection of the Earl of Hardwicke - Exhibited at the Royal Academy 1792". Faintly signed and dated, lc, on the floating mast. Paper label on verso, " Following are sold by the order of the trustees of the late Earl Hardwicke". Relined. 30"h x 44"w
