British ( 1759-1825) John Thomas Serres was the celebrated maritime painter for King George III. This work depicts the Battle of the Saintes off Dominica. The battle was a decisive victory for Admiral Lord George Brydges Rodney, which ultimately ended the French threat to Jamaica. Signed and dated, "J T Serres 1792" lc, on the floating plank. The plaque on the frame is faint, "Admiral Lord Rodney's Action Against the French Fleet - 12th April 1782 - Painted in 1792 - 1759 J.T.
