Early 20th C., with original padlock and embossed seal of Cutler Manufacturing Co. in conjunction with the United States Postal Service, two side slots both labeled "Letters" and a front door with handle, presumably for larger parcels, the paper label gives this box's address as Butterfield Station, 500 Seneca Street (Utica, NY) 3'h x 21-1/4"w x 11-1/4"d Note: This letter box was a part of James G. Cutler's patent for a mail chute and receiving box which was granted in 1883. For over twenty years the Cutler Manufacturing Company was the sole producer of the US Postal Service's mail chutes and collection boxes, making about 1600 boxes during that time.
