(American, 1783-1872) portrait of a gentleman, half-length, oil on canvas, initialed "TS" in cipher, dated 1810, labeled on frame. Lot includes two photographs of the painting before restoration by the Pennsylvania Museum in 1926. Note: According to Charles Henry Hart a portrait of Martin Van Buren is not included in "A Register of Portraits Painted by Thomas Sully 1801-1871", Philadelphia, 1909.
